Video: Another uproar in House over procedural breach in amendment of electoral Act
The House of Representatives plenary was again thrown into chaos on Tuesday as lawmakers protested a procedural breach in the consideration of amendments to the Electoral Act.
Tempers flared during plenary when Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker, who presided over the session, moved to consider the amendment bill without detailing the specific provisions under review or subjecting them to a clause-by-clause examination.
Several members interrupted proceedings, insisting that the bill must be considered in accordance with parliamentary practice, which requires each clause to be scrutinised and voted on individually.
Aggrieved lawmakers rose from their seats to the Deputy Speaker’s chanting “clause by clause” . The disturbance forced a brief halt in proceedings as some members stood to challenge the manner in which the debate was being conducted.
The uproar continued for several minutes as Lawmakers insisted on clause-by-clause consideration.
