Tennis stars gather for thrilling 2026 WTT Contender Lagos
The finest table tennis returns to Nigeria as the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos prepares to take centre stage at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium from May 19 to 24.
Since its debut in June 2023 as the successor to the ITTF Nigeria Open, the Lagos tournament has rapidly grown into one of the most exciting stops on the global World Table Tennis circuit.
Built on the legacy of the Lagos International Table Tennis Classics and the ITTF Nigeria Open, which began in 2013, the competition continues to attract some of the biggest names in world table tennis. This year’s edition offers a prize purse of $100,000 alongside 400 ITTF World Ranking points.
Lind, Ovtcharov Headline Men’s Singles Battle
Leading the men’s singles field is the reigning Lagos champion, Anders Lind. Ranked world No. 16, the Dane returns for his third appearance in Nigeria, hoping to continue his impressive form in 2026.
However, the competition promises to be fierce. Japan’s Shunsuke Togami, ranked World No.18, arrives as one of the tournament favourites, while Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov, champion in Lagos in 2024, is back to challenge for another title.
France’s Thibault Poret also adds quality to the draw, while Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo will look to capitalise on home support after disappointing outings in Tunis and Taiyuan.
With 21 players ranked inside the world’s Top 100, the men’s competition is expected to deliver high-level drama throughout the week.
Women’s Event Packed With In-Form Stars
The women’s singles category is equally loaded with talent. Japan’s Satsuki Odo arrives in Lagos in red-hot form after winning consecutive titles at the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 and WTT Contender Taiyuan 2026.
Odo defeated defending Lagos champion Honoka Hashimoto in the Taiyuan semifinals before overcoming Hitomi Sato in the final, setting up potential revenge battles in Lagos.
South Korea’s Joo Cheonhui, runner-up at the WTT Contender Tunis 2026, further strengthens the women’s field.
Rising Stars Add Extra Excitement
Among the standout wildcard entrants is India’s Yashaswini Ghorpade, who recently represented her country at the ITTF World Team Championships 2026 in London.
The rising star has already reached two WTT Feeder Series finals this season, including a runner-up finish at the WTT Feeder Cappadocia II 2026, adding another layer of excitement to an already star-studded lineup.
With returning champions, fierce rivalries and emerging talents all converging in Lagos, the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos is set to deliver another electrifying week of world-class table tennis.
