WAFU B U20: Flying Eagles edge Niger Republic to reach final
Nigeria’s U20 team, the Flying Eagles, are through to the final of the WAFU B U20 Boys’ Championship in Ghana after edging out the Niger Republic 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
The semi-final clash was a tense affair, with the Flying Eagles dominating possession and creating more chances, but unable to convert during the 90 minutes. Despite their attacking intent, Nigeria struggled to break down a disciplined Nigerien side that deployed a deep defensive setup throughout the match.
In the first half, the Flying Eagles registered three shots off target, while the Nigeriens failed to trouble Nigeria’s goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt. The second half saw increased urgency from the defending champions, but their efforts were thwarted by Niger’s compact defence.
With the game ending 0-0, it went straight to penalties. Harcourt gave Nigeria an early boost by saving Niger’s opening spot-kick. Although Nigeria’s Tahir Maigana missed his attempt, the Flying Eagles held their nerve, converting four of their five kicks, while the Niger Republic could only score three.
The victory seals a place in the final for the Flying Eagles, who will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire as they aim to retain their WAFU B crown.
