Trump to sign executive order to slash prescription drug prices by 30-80%
President Donald Trump is set to sign a major executive order to slash prescription drug prices by 30-80%.
In a post by the White House on X, the President said, “I am pleased to announce that Tomorrow morning, in the White House, at 9:00 A.M., I will be signing one of the most consequential Executive Orders in our Country’s history.”
The executive order will implement a “Most Favoured Nation” policy that requires pharmaceutical companies to offer Americans the same prices as the lowest offered anywhere else in the world. According to the President, this could reduce drug prices in the United States by 30% to 80% “almost immediately.”
“Prescription Drug and Pharmaceutical prices will be REDUCED, almost immediately, by 30% to 80%,” Trump stated in a social media post on Sunday. “They will rise throughout the World in order to equalise and, for the first time in many years, bring FAIRNESS TO AMERICA!”
The announcement represents a significant policy shift in how the U.S. approaches pharmaceutical pricing. For decades, Americans have paid substantially more for prescription medications than consumers in other developed nations, sometimes five to ten times more for identical drugs manufactured in the same facilities.
In his announcement, Trump criticized pharmaceutical companies for justifying higher U.S. prices by citing research and development costs that are “borne by the ‘suckers’ of America, ALONE.” He also referenced the influence of “Campaign Contributions” on drug pricing policies, emphasising that such contributions “can do wonders, but not with me, and not with the Republican Party.”
The President claimed the executive order would not only reduce healthcare costs for American citizens “by numbers never even thought of before” but also save the United States “TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS.”
