Nigeria alerts citizens in Gulf region over escalating Israel–Iran conflict
The Federal Government has issued a strong advisory to Nigerians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East involving Israel, United States and Iran.
In a statement released on Saturday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign of Affairs in Abuja on Saturday, the government said it is closely monitoring the volatile situation triggered by reported military strikes undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory actions by Iran against certain Gulf countries.
The ministry warned that the heightened tension in the region presents significant security risks and could escalate further, necessitating urgent precautionary measures for Nigerian nationals in the affected areas.
Under the advisory, Nigerians in Iran and neighbouring Gulf states were urged to maintain constant vigilance and remain highly conscious of their surroundings.
Citizens were specifically advised to avoid strategic locations, including military and government installations, which may become flashpoints in the ongoing hostilities.
The government also strongly recommended that Nigerians limit non-essential travel and movements until the security situation stabilises.
They were cautioned against attending large gatherings or public demonstrations, which could expose them to unforeseen dangers amid the unfolding crisis.
In addition, the ministry directed all affected citizens to strictly comply with security and safety directives issued by local authorities, emphasising that cooperation with law enforcement agencies in host countries is critical to personal safety during periods of instability.
To guard against panic and misinformation, Nigerians were encouraged to rely on credible international and local news sources for updates, while avoiding unverified reports circulating on social media and informal platforms.
The Federal Government further assured citizens that Nigerian diplomatic missions in the region are on high alert.
‘The Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran and embassies in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been placed on alert to provide consular support and facilitate communication with Nigerians who may require assistance”, the statement read.
The ministry reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains a top priority of the Federal Government, noting that the situation is being continuously assessed and further updates will be communicated as necessary.
Nigeria called on all parties involved in the conflict to embrace restraint and return to dialogue.
The government urged a de-escalation of hostilities in the interest of global peace, regional stability and peaceful coexistence.
