Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most gifted playmakers, Nwosu left an enduring legacy as a player and coach.

He Died at 62 in Lagos

Nwosu passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, Lagos, after spending five days in intensive care battling a prolonged illness.

Youngest Player in Nigeria’s Historic 1980 AFCON Triumph

He was the youngest member of the Nigeria national football team squad that won the country’s first continental title at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations in Lagos.

Nicknamed “Youngest Millionaire”

Nwosu earned the nickname “Youngest Millionaire” after his breakthrough as a teenage star during Nigeria’s historic AFCON triumph.

Played in Multiple AFCON Tournaments

Beyond the 1980 victory, he represented Nigeria in the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, 1984 Africa Cup of Nations and 1988 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing runner-up in the 1984 and 1988 editions.

Scored One of Nigeria’s Memorable World Cup Qualifier Goals

At age 18, Nwosu scored a spectacular late goal in a FIFA World Cup qualification match against the Guinea national football team on April 25, 1981, helping Nigeria advance to the final round against the Algeria national football team.

Starred for Several Club Teams

At club level, he played for New Nigerian Bank FC of Benin City and ACB FC of Lagos. He also had spells abroad with ASEC Mimosas in Côte d’Ivoire and Racing FC Bafoussam in Cameroon.

Nwosu was celebrated for his dribbling ability, creativity, technical skill and vision, making him one of the most admired midfielders of his generation.
