Former Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong trapped in Qatar

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is reportedly stranded in Qatar following rising crisis in the Middle East.

The 32-year-old defender, who recently signed for Al Ahli after leaving Al-Kholood in January 2026, is currently unable to leave the country amid heightened security concerns that have led to the suspension of flights and football activities.

Troost-Ekong is understood to be grounded following the closure of key air routes and the suspension of commercial flights, developments linked to rising military tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

Qatari authorities have introduced precautionary restrictions that have disrupted international travel and forced an indefinite pause in several sporting competitions, including the Qatar Stars League.

Troost-Ekong is not alone in being affected. Reports indicate that several high-profile foreign stars, including Marco Verratti, Philippe Coutinho, and Julian Draxler, are also unable to travel as restrictions remain in force.

The disruption extends beyond football. Major carriers such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, and flydubai have cancelled or reduced services to multiple destinations, leaving thousands of travellers stranded across the region.

As of midnight on March 2, there is no official timeline for the reopening of Qatari airspace. Aviation analysts describe the situation as the most significant disruption to global travel since the 2020 pandemic.

The club has reportedly relocated all foreign players to secure locations as they await further directives from Qatar’s Ministry of Interior.
