CitySports unveils global sports program to spotlight young Nigerian talents
CitySports Africa has officially announced the 2025 edition of its Global Sports Program (GSP), a pioneering international youth sports development initiative aimed at discovering and nurturing young Nigerian talents on the global stage.
The GSP is designed to provide young African athletes with opportunities to compete in international tournaments, gain exposure, and experience elite-level coaching across multiple sports disciplines.
The 2025 program will roll out in two phases: the first in June and the second, tagged “Global November,” set for November 2025.
As part of the June itinerary, young athletes from Nigeria will represent the country in three international competitions: football in Stuttgart, Germany (June 6–8), swimming at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai, UAE (June 14–15), and basketball in Barcelona, Spain (June 27–29).
Platform for emerging athletes
Speaking at a press briefing, Shola Opaleye, CEO of CitySports Africa, emphasised the transformative potential of the initiative.
“The GSP serves as a gateway for young players to gain international exposure, experience world-class coaching, and compete with peers across borders. It exemplifies CitySports Africa’s mission of building bridges between local talent and the global sports ecosystem.”
Reflecting on the program’s journey, Opaleye added: “When we launched the Global Sports Program, the mission was simple: to put young talents on a path to global recognition.
“Thirteen international trips later, we’ve seen how these experiences build confidence, unlock opportunities, and shape future champions.
More than just competition, GSP is a platform for growth, exposure, and game-changing opportunities.”
Elite training across all disciplines
Football coach Bamidele Nurudeen shared insights into the athletes’ training regimen.
“The teams train four times a week with a focused program, including Individual Runs (IR) to improve speed, stamina, and endurance. Every session is tailored to prepare them for the competitive demands of global tournaments.”
The same rigorous preparation is evident across other disciplines. Swimming coach Kolawole Ogunsemore highlighted the developmental impact of international exposure.
“It’s not just about winning. It’s about building character and instilling leadership and exemplary traits in the athletes, qualities that will set them apart in life.”
Focused and ready to win
Basketball coach Tochukwu Nsofor also reflected on past successes and the team’s mindset heading into 2025.
“We’ve had great wins in previous tournaments, and our players are even better prepared this time. We’re not just going to participate; we’re going to win.”
