Atalanta CEO confirms Ademola Lookman’s desire to quit the club
Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi has confirmed that Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman is keen to depart the Gewiss Stadium this summer, with Inter Milan reportedly leading the race to sign the Everton winger.
Speaking during the unveiling of new signing Honest Ahanor, Percassi addressed the ongoing transfer speculation, telling reporters (via Corriere dello Sport).
“Lookman is a player expected to leave this summer, in line with the club’s philosophy of one key sale per year. But the transfer market is full of surprises — you all saw what happened with Retegui.”
Earlier this month, Mateo Retegui departed for Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah in a deal worth around €65 million, easing Atalanta’s financial pressure and allowing them to hold firm on Lookman’s €50 million valuation.
Percassi confirmed that Inter Milan have now made their first formal approach for the 2024 African Player of the Year, following weeks of reported interest.
“For Lookman, despite a lot of interest, there had never been anything concrete — at least not until yesterday when the first official offer arrived,” he said.
“I saw [Inter CEO] Marotta at the Lega offices. We have a great relationship, both personally and professionally. Over the next few days, we’ll calmly evaluate the offer and then respond. But let me be clear, the timing and value of Atalanta players leaving are decisions made solely by the club.”
Inter’s latest bid reportedly stands at €42 million plus €3 million in bonuses, still shy of Atalanta’s €50 million asking price. The Nerazzurri are eager to finalise the deal before the new season begins, with manager Christian Chivu keen to add Lookman’s attacking versatility to his squad.
