FIFA crisis deepens as Infantino meets senior staff over failed FFE plan

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is set to hold a crisis meeting with senior FIFA officials in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday as mounting pressure continues to build following the collapse of his controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal.

The emergency talks come after Infantino was forced to abandon plans to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise, a commercial subsidiary that would have overseen the commercial and operational rights of FIFA’s major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and Club World Cup.

FFE withdrawal deepens leadership crisis

The proposal, which included plans to sell a 20 percent stake in the new company to private investors, triggered fierce opposition from football stakeholders across the globe.

The project was first revealed in reports by The Times and the Financial Times before FIFA confirmed key details. The plan was formally withdrawn last weekend after facing widespread resistance from continental football bodies and national associations.

The abandoned proposal has since plunged FIFA into one of its biggest governance crises in recent years, prompting calls for greater transparency and accountability within world football’s governing body.

Wenger distances himself from proposal

FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Arsène Wenger, publicly distanced himself from the project, saying he had no involvement in its development.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Wenger said withdrawing the proposal was “absolutely necessary and beyond question.”

He also stressed his commitment to transparent governance, saying: “I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity.”

Wenger had faced criticism in recent days for remaining silent over the proposed restructuring before eventually breaking his silence following the project’s withdrawal.

Top FIFA officials address staff

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström also addressed employees in an internal email, describing the controversy surrounding the proposal as a “sad and reproachable series of events” that had now ended with the permanent abandonment of the project.

Grafström assured staff they would be protected from the political fallout, writing that employees would be “defended and safeguarded from the political context we currently experience.”

He added that while “individuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go,” FIFA’s mission and responsibility to world football would remain unchanged.

His comments followed the resignation of Infantino’s senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, who stepped down last week after describing the FFE proposal as “a bad deal for football.”
