France end Morocco’s historic World Cup run to book semi-final spot

Morocco’s remarkable FIFA 2026 World Cup journey came to an end on Thursday after France secured a clinical 2-0 victory in their quarter-final clash to book a place in the semi-finals.

The Atlas Lions, Africa’s final remaining representatives, carried the hopes of an entire continent into the blockbuster encounter but were ultimately undone by the quality and experience of Didier Deschamps’ side at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Kylian Mbappe recovered from an earlier penalty miss to inspire France, scoring once and setting up Ousmane Dembele as Les Bleus advanced to the last four.

Mbappe makes amends after penalty miss

France captain Mbappe had the chance to give his side an early lead after winning a first-half penalty when he was fouled by Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui.

However, after a lengthy delay before the kick was taken, the Real Madrid forward saw his tame effort comfortably saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Mbappe redeemed himself in the 60th minute, curling a superb effort into the net from the edge of the penalty area to finally break Morocco’s resistance.

Dembele seals France victory

France doubled their advantage just six minutes later through Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele.

The winger was allowed to drive at the Morocco defence before firing a low shot that Bounou got a hand to but could not keep out.

Mbappe’s goal was his eighth of the tournament, drawing him level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. The French star currently leads the standings thanks to a superior assist tally.

Morocco bow out with pride

Despite the defeat, Morocco once again underlined the rapid rise of African football on the global stage.

The Atlas Lions had been tipped to challenge France after another impressive World Cup campaign, having become the continent’s last surviving team in the competition.

Their run also capped a historic tournament for Africa, with a record nine African nations reaching the knockout stages following the expansion to a 48-team World Cup.

Semi-finals await France

The victory sends the 2018 world champions into the semi-finals, where they will face either Spain or Belgium for a place in the FIFA 2026 World Cup final.

While Morocco’s dream has come to an end, their performances throughout the tournament have further strengthened Africa’s growing reputation as a genuine force in world football.
