World Cup Qualifier: FIFA probes South Africa over ineligible player
World Cup Qualifier: FIFA probes South Africa over ineligible player
Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup hopes have been reignited as FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against South Africa for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March.
Mokoena had picked up yellow cards against Benin in November 2023 and Zimbabwe in June 2024, triggering a one-match suspension under FIFA rules. Despite this, Mokoena featured in the match against Lesotho.
According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), FIFA has charged both the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the player.
In a letter to SAFA dated September 15, 2025, FIFA confirmed the case has been referred to its Disciplinary Committee, giving both parties six days to respond.
If found guilty, South Africa may lose three points and three goals, which would be awarded to Lesotho.
South Africa, currently at the top of Group C with 17 points, would drop to 14 points, the same points as Benin, but still ahead on goal difference.
Lesotho would rise to nine points, tightening the race with Nigeria and Rwanda, both of which are on 11 points.
With just two qualifiers left, Bafana Bafana would face intense pressure to beat Zimbabwe and Rwanda in October, while relying on rivals to drop points.
