Egypt unveils Gaza plan as Arab nations reject Trump proposal
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced on Sunday that Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan is complete and will be presented at an emergency Arab summit in Cairo on Tuesday.
The plan, which ensures Palestinians remain in their homeland, comes as Arab nations unite to counter President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal for US control of Gaza and Palestinian resettlement.
Arab states swiftly rejected Trump’s February 4 plan, which appears to abandon the long-established US commitment to a two-state solution and has sparked outrage among Palestinians and across the Arab world. Read also: Pro-Ukraine protests across US as European leaders gather in London
Speaking at a press conference with EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica, Abdelatty emphasised the need for international support and funding.
“We will hold intensive talks with major donor countries once the plan is adopted at the upcoming Arab Summit,” he said, highlighting Europe’s vital role in financing Gaza’s reconstruction efforts. The announcement comes as tensions escalate, with Israel blocking aid trucks into Gaza on Sunday as the standoff over the six-week ceasefire intensifies.
Abdelatty condemned using aid as a weapon, stating that “collective punishment could not be permitted.”
With the first phase of the ceasefire agreement now expired, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the original agreement that was scheduled to move into its second phase. “It will be difficult, but with goodwill and political determination, it can be achieved,” he said.
Following Tuesday’s summit, Abdelatty said foreign ministers from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation will hold an urgent meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss implementation strategies.
“We will ensure that the results of the Arab summit are presented to the world in the best possible way,” he added.
