…Police arrest 16 suspended kidnappers 

The Kwara State police command on Friday said it has arrested one Gobri Yusuf, a 15-year-old boy, over alleged killing of elder sister of her deceased mother, using household items.

The suspect said to be residing with the deceased in Ilorin killed her guardian, identified as Akanbi A. on January 14, 2026 with items such as frying pan, weighing scale, kitchen turning stick (spatula) and kitchen knives.

Adekimi Ojo, the state commissioner of Police, who confirmed the incident described it as pathetic, saying that the suspect had allegedly involved himself in stealing of expensive Android phones before the incident.

The police boss, who noted that he personally interrogated the suspect, added that investigation revealed that the suspect had previously tried to kill the deceased on two occasions by poisoning her soup and watermelon with snipers.

“He first mentioned somebody and later said he was the only one that carried out the attack. He was sent to buy petrol and some other items. He came back with the petrol, put it inside the electricity power generator and switched it on while the woman was taking her bath. This in an attempt to prevent anyone knowing of his actions. It was pathetic. The woman ran toward the kitchen and said “Iwo de ko lo ye ki o pami o” meaning – you’re not the one supposed to kill me.”

According to the CP, the suspect confirmed that his action was motivated by resentment against the deceased, who “disturbed him” by scolding him for wrong behaviour.

It stated: “On January 14, 2026, at about 20:30hrs, a distress report was received concerning the discovery of one Akanbi A. (female) in a pool of blood at her residence.

“Police operatives responded immediately and commenced a discreet investigation. Findings revealed that the suspect, who was residing with the deceased, allegedly concealed himself behind a door and attacked her while she was bathing using household items.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed that the act was motivated by resentment and disclosed that previous attempts to poison the deceased had failed.

“After committing the crime, he changed his clothes and left the residence under the pretext of running an errand. He later contacted the deceased’s husband, who discovered her lifeless body. The suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation”.

The Police Commissioner also disclosed that the command arrested 16 suspected kidnappers linked to abduction of construction workers in the Ifelodun local government area of the state as well as in Oro Ago town.

The police boss said that the suspected kidnappers in Oro Ago were arrested with 10 motorcycles and dangerous weapons.

According to him, the cases and operational successes presented clearly demonstrated the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order in Kwara State through intelligence-led policing and decisive tactical interventions.

These achievements he said are aligned with the strategic direction and reform-driven vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, whose assumption of office signals a renewed focus on professionalism, operational efficiency, and strengthened internal security architecture nationwide.
